The future is readying for us

December 27, 2012

When my house was being built, my husband and I were living 2000 miles away from it, in separate states. We hadn’t yet met. The house was built nonetheless. Trees were carefully planted that many years later would provide shade for my family while my children ran beneath sprinklers and chased balls.

When my car was being manufactured, we didn’t have a need for a car that allowed children to be easily put in and out of car seats. We were carefree newlyweds, finding our way. When my car glided through the factory, built like lego pieces snapping together, we didn’t know the family that awaited us, like roots in the darkness waiting to spring forth.

I have a river friend that holds a low, wide rock perfect for sitting. The rock rests in a section of river where the water moves fast over smaller rocks, creating white noise and white light as it flows past. When this, my favorite rock, was moved by glaciers and rounded by water, humans may not have existed. Yet in the passing eons and millenia and days, a place was created for me to sit where water from underground springs could carry my troubles downstream.

Looking back on my life, I almost met my husband three times before I did. In retrospect, it would have been odd if we hadn’t met, our trajectories were continually almost-colliding. Our relationship waited to erupt like fireworks in the sky. Without realizing it, we were inching toward each other as if on a long road. It just took time to reach each other.

The future is making a place for us, sets the table for us. It knows who will sit beside us. It’s hard to fathom that I was not meant to meet some of the people I have met in my life. The odds outweigh all logical probability. Finally we find ourselves together. Perhaps that is the spark between strangers, the recognition of love at first sight, the histories felt between strangers. The undeniable feeling of home in a place one has never been before. There is a place that we belong. The plans for us are finished, the house we breathe life into, the river that cleanses our spirits, the trees that shade us. Ah, there you are, the preparations are ready. It was just a matter of time.

So, so beautiful! And the photograph is simply stunning. I’m glad the future now has some tools to make what it wants to do easier – like the internet – where I am so glad I met you!

We are all parallel lines that eventualy, contrary to geometry, converge and meet in that far distant point.

We are trees playing in the breeze and sunlight, sharing butterflies. Our branches grow closer, my friend.
